Been  a  bit  tied  up   with  exhibition  stuff  lately. Finally  got  round  to  tackling  this  draw  in  which  has  been  at  the  back  of my mind  all  the  time.
I like  both  the  FW190  and  the  Condor  so  tried  a  couple  of  small  sketches .
The  Fw190 a/c is some  5.5  inches  long nose to tail  and  the  Condor  fuselage 7.5 in. long .
Used 6H , 2H  pencils and a 2B graphite  stick  on  110 gms  Windsor and  Newton Cartridge paper.
Made  a  hash of  the  swastika  on  the  FW190  - then  rediscovered  fine  dots  as  the  way to  initially  fill  in small   detail  like   this.
Not  too  happy  with  the  results  -  the  "H"  pencils caught quite  sharply  at  times  and  the  2B proved  a bit  fierce  and  grainy  unless  handled  very  carefully .
Enjoyed  doing  these  even  though pencil  is  not  my usual medium  -  it  gets  the  brain  cells  going    and looks  very  pleasing  at the   finish.

p.s.
These  are  freehand sketches  from  small photographs  so   not  very  accurate.

The Condor is very nice Neil.  It was an especially good looking a/c in its civil versions without the gondolas and turrets;  something in the line of a DC-7.  It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be much of a market for paintings of civil a/c.

2H pencils do seem to be a bit too hard on the paper.  I prefer an HB for general work

Couple of nice sketches Neil. I'm with you Don. I do most of my general drawing work with an HB or 2H. I also use 2B for very dark areas, 4H for fine lines, and 7H for just laying in the outline very lightly.

Nice sketches Neil! I like viewing things like this. It's almost like looking into someone's mind as a project develops.

Neil hi

Nice pencil work, I think the Condor especially would work into a nice painting

Thanks  Folks
Pete - I  thought the  same  -  the  Condor   would  make a  good  painting   -I  can  see it  against  a  sunrise  / sunset  background   -   there's  just  something  appealing  about    that  image  and  the  lines  of  the  Condor  itself. One  of those  aircraft  that  captured  my imagination   from schoolboy  War   comic  days.
Thats  the  fun  of   doing these  draw -ins  - you stumble  across  ideas  that would  otherwise  pass  you   by.
Mark /Don  - I  think  the  quality  of  paper  has  a  lot  to  do  with  the poor  performance on  this  one   - I usually  manage to  lay  the  pencil  quite   evenly  but this   proved a  bit  draggy.
HB  is  useful  but   I  find  it is a  bit too  bland   for  high  contrast  work -  leading  to forced  /  hard  pressed  darks   so I like the  "B" s   for  really  strong  darks.
Lyle  - dont go  there !!
